Cambelt repair and change

Hunts Vehicle Services can repair and change cambelts from our conveniently located workshop in Wimbledon for most makes and models of cars and vans.  Cambelts, also known as timing belts, are prone to natural wear and tear due to prolonged mileage and deterioration over time.

The timing belt is one of the most crucial parts of a car engine.  It is a rubber belt that has teeth that synchonises the rotation camshaft with the crankshaft.  In essence the cambelt regulates the way in which the engine works.  It controls the opening and closing of the valves to the various cylinders in time to ensure correct combustion in the engine.  The primary role of the timing belt is to control the timing and sequence of the opening and closing.  The cambelt is prone to wear and tear, should it crack, tear or snap it can cause significant damage to the vehicle engine.  It can cause major damage to the engine pistons and valves and this can be very costly. In severe instances this can result in the complete engine needing to be replaced.

When should you replace your cambelt?

Most manufacturers suggest that you cambelt should be replaced either a time- or mileage-based change, depending on which comes first.  There is a lot of variation between both manufacturers and engines when it comes to when a change is required. This could range from 40,000 miles up to 100,000 miles for mileage based guidelines or from four to six years on time based guidelines.  We advise that you refer to your vehicle handbook which will specify the change frequency.   In our opinion, manufacturer’s intervals should be treated as the absolute maximum, as failure of the cambelt can cause serious mechanical engine damage.  We advise that you should take care and review with your garage servicing centre the condition of the timing belt on every annual vehicle service.
